While there's no talking in the second videos, there are short descriptions of the moves plus demonstrations of them in slow motion, which is very helpful for beginners. There are also Challenges in the app, where you can test either yourself, a friend or a pro player The power challenge lets you compete against a friend to see who has the fastest kick.

The pro challenge tests your ability to replicate a certain type of "pro-level" kick -- from a wide, low shot around a wall to a more direct, over-the-wall shot. Both types of challenges were a fun way to practice with and battle teammates. If you want to improve your shots, being able to visualize the curve and speed of a kick is more than just a novelty, it's extremely helpful for training. And yet, all players can benefit from being able to see their kicks onscreen and learn from their mistakes.

From a coaching standpoint the feedback the app provides is invaluable as a training tool for correcting bad habits or improving good ones. But players or families on a budget would be better off getting a regular ball and bringing it to soccer camp -- or just practicing frequently.

Plus, the lack of battery notifications anywhere on the ball or in-app is frustrating. For a team, the Adidas miCoach Smart Ball is worth the steep price to improve free kicks and set plays. And while this does keep the device's cost down, you'll have to make do without some features that can be quite useful for certain workouts, like a GPS. Be aware too, that wrist-based heart monitors don't have a great track record , although we haven't fully tested this one. The lack of a GPS won't be a problem if you run the same route every day or train on a treadmill, and if you do want to map your run, you can still do so with the Fit Smart with some extra work.

You'll need to exercise with your Fit Smart and your phone; the phone will then track the route and then add the GPS data to the other data collected by the Fit Smart, all wrapped up in one file. This bare-bones set of features was a deliberate choice by Adidas, which doesn't view the Fit Smart as a lifestyle band that's can be worn all day.
