The controversy over the birth place of Lord Rama has now been more or less settled. For centuries, Kannada mythology and folklore have claimed that Hanuman was born in Karnataka. The scholars argue that the same place was known as Kishkinda in Ramayana. It stated that they established the fact that Tirumala is the birthplace of Hanuman after four months of intensive research. Venkatachalam is also known as Anjanadri and 19 other names.
Hanuman was born on Anjanadri in Treta Yuga. The historians, Sanskrit scholars and mythology researchers in Karnataka have sharply reacted to this, terming the findings of the TTD as baseless and motivated. Now, a third spot is also being projected as a possible birthplace based on references in the Ramayana. TTD executive officer K S Jawahar Reddy says there is both mythological, astrological and scientific evidence to support their claims. The panel, he says, has gone through the scriptural evidence found in Siva, Brahma, Brahmanda, Varaha and Matsya Puranas besides Venkatachala Mahatyam and Brihatsamhita of Varahamihira.
The hill has a Hanuman temple on the top with a rock carved idol and Rama, Sita and Anjana Devi temples in the vicinity. Stating that the experts committee constituted by the TTD on the issue had no authority to decide the birthplace of Hanuman, Govindananda Saraswati said such sensitive issues should be decided by Hindu religious seers such as the Shankaracharyas, Madhwacharyas and Jeeyar Swamijis.
He alleged that the arguments of the TTD were misleading the common people. Did the experts committee ever come to Kishkindha to examine the evidences? Speaking to reporters separately, Muralidhar Sharma said various ancient scriptures including Puranas and copper plate inscriptions clearly indicated that Tirumala, also known as Anjanadri, was the birth place of Lord Hanuman.
He strongly refuted the claims made by Govindananda Saraswati that Lord Hanuman was born at Anjanahalli on the banks of river Pampa near Hampi in Karnataka. The claim was based on a report submitted by an eight-member expert committee headed by Muralidhar Sharma, constituted in December Muralidhar Sharma said that the experts committee of the TTD had done extensive research for four months and gathered mythological, literary, archaeological and geographical evidence to come to the conclusion that Tirumala, also mentioned as Anjanadri in ancient scriptures, was the birthplace of Hanuman.
Reacting on the debate, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former TTD trust board member G Bhanuprakash Reddy said it would be better if the issue were left to the Hindu seers like Shankaracharyas and Jeeyars to decide.
