A maternal Merlin of a sort, Glinda is both a generous guide and a firm teacher. She assists Dorothy in key moments, giving her the ruby slippers and changing the weather to wake her out of a poppy-induced stupor.

This cinematic Glinda is not only a sorceress then, but also a sage. It also opened the door for a new type of narrative featuring the witch as a protagonist, and not just as a villain or sparkly sidekick. Though the specific conflicts that these lead witches face vary from script to script, each must negotiate her relationship to the power she has—and whether her magic is seen as an asset or a threat is often a reflection of the sexual politics of her time.

But they have to relinquish their gifts in exchange for true love, prioritizing conjugal bliss over conjuration. And the enchanting champions of the Harry Potter films and the Netflix series Chilling Adventures of Sabrina display a cautiously hopeful outlook about the intersection of magic and social justice. The Potter films and original books can be read as an allegory about the fight against prejudice.

Sabrina has plotlines that center black and queer characters, which is especially fitting when one considers that witchcraft has been historically linked to marginalized groups.

Oz theorists reckon the Tin Man acts on her behalf, pointing to the scene where the Wizard's hot air balloon accidentally becomes untethered.

If you look carefully, you can see the Tin Man unhook the ropes anchoring the aircraft to the ground, suggesting it isn't an accident. When you see the look of surprise on the Tin Man's face after he releases the balloon, though, it looks as if he releases it in a trance. It's possible that he's not acting of his free will. Glinda is, after all, a strong spellcaster, and the Tin Man's artificial, hollow head probably makes for an easy target.

The non-canonical prequel novel and its musical adaptation Wicked provides the strongest suggestion that Glinda isn't as sweet and innocent as she seems in The Wizard of Oz. In the story, Galinda as she was once called and Elphaba, who becomes the Wicked Witch of the West, are revealed to have once been firm friends who fell out because of clashing personalities and romantic rivalry.

The young Galinda is characterized as your classic "mean girl" - pretty, popular, and ruthlessly ambitious. Although she earns her "Good Witch" title in the end, she uses underhanded tactics to get what she wants, and what she wants is a position of power and adoration. In Oz the Great and Powerful , the future Wizard of Oz, Oscar, mistakenly identifies Glinda as being a wicked witch - responsible for all the magical land's ills.

Of course, this turns out to be part of the Wicked Witch of the East's plan to frame Glinda for her own misdeeds, but it certainly gives Glinda cause to enact retribution on the deceitful witch. Additionally, the Wicked Witch of the West also receives a more sympathetic portrayal here, as she does in Wicked.

As Theodora, she cares deeply for the Land of Oz and remains convinced that Glinda is a great evil from the Dark Forest that Oscar has been sent to eliminate.

Unfortunately, this mislaid fear slowly poisons her mind and body until she comes to resemble the green-skinned cackling hag everyone knows from the original film. You might call Dorothy's arrival in Oz fate, but it's also quite possible that, in a world of wonder and magic, someone pulls fate's strings.
